Built for outside

Patio season in Suwanee is most of the year

Restaurants around Suwanee Town Center and Old Town, and pad-site restaurants along Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road and near the I-85 Gateway, rely on outdoor seating for a big share of their covers. Apartment communities across Suwanee market pool decks, grilling stations and covered lounges as part of the lease. All of those spaces depend on low walls, bar fronts, planters and enclosures that are fully exposed to weather.

That exposure is the problem. A patio wall or grill island gets rain on its top surface, splash from the deck, heat from cooking equipment and wear from chairs, carts and guests. Built like an interior partition with stucco skinned over it, it cracks at the cap, stains at the base and starts shedding finish within a few seasons.

We build these elements as exterior walls. Framing or block cores get a proper water barrier, caps are sloped or covered with stone or metal, bases are detailed to drain away from the deck, and stucco is applied in coats with control joints where the wall is long. Around grills and heat sources, we use noncombustible materials and leave clearances to the equipment manufacturer’s instructions. The finish is matched to the main building so the space looks like part of the property.

Picking the right base for the space

Concrete block is the most durable base for an outdoor bar or grill station. It does not rot, it takes stucco directly, and it handles the heat around commercial grills. It is heavy, so it needs a slab or footing that can carry it, which matters on elevated amenity decks.

A framed base with cement board is lighter and easier to shape, which helps with curved bars, long runs and decks with weight limits. If the frame is combustible, grills must be installed with the insulated jacket or clearances their manufacturer requires, and we plan the openings around that from the start. Load limits on decks and podiums are confirmed by the owner’s engineer or design team.

For existing features, refinishing is often the simplest option when the base is sound. We check before we quote and tell you if a crack or stain points to a problem a new coat would only cover.

Our process

Building around guests and residents

We schedule around service hours and pool seasons, and around the licensed trades, so gas, plumbing and power rough-ins are in place before a base is closed up.

Plan & lay out

We review the plans, confirm equipment cut-outs and clearances, and mark where licensed trades need to bring utilities.

  • Equipment specs reviewed
  • Slab & drainage checked
  • Written, itemized scope

Build the base

Block is laid or the frame is built and sheathed in cement board, with openings framed for grills, refrigeration and doors.

  • Square, level base
  • Openings framed to spec
  • Work area fenced off

Stucco & finish

Base and finish coats are applied and cured, the bottom edge is detailed to shed water, and the color is matched to the building.

  • Coats cured properly
  • Drip edge at the slab
  • Color & texture matched

Planning a patio or amenity upgrade?

Bring us in early. A base planned around the equipment and the deck costs less than one rebuilt later.

Amenity spaces in Suwanee

Busy patios and pool decks across Suwanee

Outdoor spaces in Suwanee are in use for much of the year, so repairs have to fit around service and residents.

Restaurant patios near Town Center Park see heavy use around events and weekends, and community pool areas are busiest from spring through early fall. We schedule demolition and coat work for slower days or early hours, keep work areas fenced from guests, and plan cure time so the space is ready before the next rush or the start of pool season.

Grill stations & bars

Stucco surrounds built with noncombustible cores and clearances to the equipment.

Pool cabanas & lounges

Amenity structures for apartment communities, built and repaired before the season opens.

Patio walls & planters

Sloped caps and drained bases so low walls stop cracking and staining.

Questions & answers

Outdoor dining and amenity questions in Suwanee

What Suwanee restaurant operators and community managers ask about outdoor stucco.

Does a new patio wall or outdoor kitchen in Suwanee need a permit?
New structures, gas and electrical work usually require permits, and repairs may not. Check with the City of Suwanee or Gwinnett County for your address before building anything new.
Our restaurant is near Suwanee Town Center. Are there design rules for patio walls?
Possibly. Properties in and around Town Center and Old Town may be subject to the city’s design standards for materials and colors. Check with the City of Suwanee before changing the look of a patio.
Can you work around our dining hours?
Yes. We schedule noisy and dusty work before opening or on slower days, fence the work area and clean up daily so the patio can seat guests.
Why does the stucco on our patio wall keep cracking at the top?
A flat cap holds water and cracks along its edges. Rebuilding the cap with slope, or adding stone or metal coping, usually stops it.
Can you build stucco around a built-in grill?
Yes, using noncombustible framing or block and clearances from the grill manufacturer’s installation instructions. Gas and electrical connections are handled by licensed trades.
